Avatar Review :)

I saw Avatar in 3D on Tuesday and since there is nothing to do today I thought i would do a review on it.

Of course I shall start with some stolen information to explain about the movie and such...

The film begins in the year 2154 and focuses on Pandora, an inhabited Earth-like moon of Polyphemus, one of the three fictional gas giants orbiting Alpha Centauri A. Humans are engaged in mining Pandora's reserves of a precious mineral, while the na'vi — the sapient race of humanoids indigenous to the moon — resist the colonists' expansion, which threatens the continued existence of the na'vi and the destruction of the Pandoran ecosystem. The film's title refers to the remotely controlled, genetically engineered human-na'vi bodies used by the film's human characters to interact with the natives. When his brother is killed in battle, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand - and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

If you've been living under a rock for the last six months and had no idea what Avatar was, then I hope that little snippet of information gave you a rough idea.

Since I kinda explained the movie above I think I might take this review in a new direction from my previous ones and go into more depth with the main characters...

Jake Sully played by Sam Worthington
(who is from Australia :D)
Jake sully is an ex-marine. He is selected into the Avatar program to replace his twin brother (who was killed) on a planet called Pandoara which has an expensive mineral called Unobtanium. While he is on a mission Jake is accepted into a na'vi clan (the native people on Pandora) and uses his new position to kind of infiltrate the clan (whose tribe is situated on the largest deposit of unobtanium) in attempt to get the tribe to move territories. While learning their ways he begins to see how what the humans are doing is wrong and fights as a na'vi to protect Pandora against distruction.

Sam Worthington played Jake Sully with emotion and a the right sort of attitude for the role. Jake was quite playful and experimental but also a bit of a smarts-ass at times. Some of his remarks were quite amusing. He also has his fair share of dramatic and serious scenes with motivation speeches and sadness which really showed Worthington's range of acting ability. At times his accent was a little rough and would switch from an american accent back to his australian accent but it was not too noticable. Sam Worthington is a capable and compelling actor and played the role of Jake Sully quite convincingly.

Neytiri played by Zoe Saldana.
Neytiri is a Na'vi from the planet Pandora. Her father is the leader of the tribe and her mother is the spiritual leader. She lives in and around the 'Home tree'- a gigantic tree situated over the largest deposit of unobtainium in Pandora. She saves Jake from a group of anmals treatening him and he follows her back to the tribe. After Jake is accepted by the tribe, Naytiri is instructed to teach Jake the ways of her people. With her great disleasure she instructs Jake in the customs and ways of her people and their culture and they become infatuated with eachother. When the humans threaten to eliminate the na'vi's territory to mine the unobtaninium, Neytiri pairs with Jake and her tribe to defend her home and her people and drive the humans away.

Zoe Saldana plays Neytiri with a confident but deep persona. She is strong and idependent but her love and devotion to her people is amazing. Saldana shows these characteristics through her prominent facial and bodily emotions. She portrays happiness, anger, grief, sadness, passion and many other emotions throughout the movie very convincingly but with a hint of alieness showing her true origin as an na'vi not a human. Zoe Saldana is obviously an extemely diverse but capable actor and this especially show in her her role as Neyiri.

Colonel Miles Quaritach played by Stephen Lang.
Colonel Miles is a leader of an operation to rid the area of natives where Neytiri's tribe live so that a human corporation can mine the land for unobtainium. He first approaches Jake with the offer to give him back the use of his legs in return for insiders infmation on the na'vi. He is direct and straight to the pointwith the soldiers in the operation. When Jake hasn't rid the area of the na'vi in the time he was alloted, Colonel Miles goes into action and wages war against that natives destroying anything or anyone who gets in his way.

Stephen Lang plays Colonel Miles Quaritach as a complete bad-ass. He's tough and ruthless and Lang shows this in every aspect of his character. Although his character is a pretty typical: a tough looking, heavy southern accented, khaki wearing, scar bearing, strong voiced soldier, Lang incorporates just the right ammount of evil bad guy...about 95%. I'm not really aquainted with what kind of characters Lang usually plays but he was pretty spot on with this one.

Dr. Grace Augustine played by Sigourney Weaver.
Dr. Grace Augustine accompanies Jake. Her goal is to help him through his battle against the enormous amount of diverse Unknown creatures on the planet of 'Alpha Centauri B-4' and make sure he, herself, and the rest of the operation make it out alive. Dr. Grace Augustine is the lead scientist in the Avatar operation/experiment and is very knowledgeable in the medical field and learns that her knowledge could save not only one but many. She is close to the na'vi and even opened a school in one of the tribes. As her fight for survival grows on she learns that she will need more than just a medical strength and knowledge in order to survive. In the end Grace will need to battle for whats right.

Sigourney Weaver plays Dr. Grace Augustine with just the right ammount of femmininity and a load of kick-ass personality. She plays her as a strong, independant and overall smart leader and she doesn't take crap from any of the corporations above her. Weaver is suited to this character with her ide range of differnet personalities and emotions. She is witty and independant and doesn't take any bullshit and Weaver portrays this well on the screen.

Other main characters in Avatar...

Trudy Chacon played by Michelle Rodriquez

The ass-kicking helicopter pilot who helps Jake against the humans. Shes quite funny.

Norm Spellman played by Joel Moore
The scientist/avatar who is on the same operation/mission as Jake Sully.
At one stage in the movie he seems kind of jealous of Jake.

Eytukan played by Wes Studi
The leader of the na'vi tribe who live in the 'Home Tree'.
Father of Neytiri and mate of Mo'at.

Mo'at played by CCH Pounder (no photo)
Spiritual Leader of the tribe who live in the 'Home Tree'.
Mother of Neytiri and mate of Etukan.

Parker Selfridge played by Giovanni Ribisi.
Leader of the company running the mining for uobtainium on Pandora.

Even though this movie wasn't very original I still quite enjoyed it. It had the greatest special effects I have ever seen.Even though it went for almost three hours it was fast paced and had lots of different aspects and themes including right and wrong, love, hate, good versus evil, learning, fighting, war, trust, loyalty...you name it. I would recommend this movie too anyone becuse it was quite enjoyable (oh and it's best to see it in 3D because its awesome!).
